These historic parklands cover 460 hectares and provide a valuable oasis of peace and relaxation in the southwest part of London. They consist of a mix of open meadows, woodlands, ponds, and marshes, offering a rich flora and fauna that make them a popular destination for walks, picnics, and nature observation.

Recreational activities in Putney Commons

The Commons include several sections, including Putney Heath, known for its expansive meadows, and Wimbledon Common, valued for its forests and walking trails. These areas have a long history and were originally common land accessible to the public, giving the Commons their name and significance as recreational areas. It is particularly noteworthy that they remain a public heritage to this day, representing an important part of London's cultural and natural heritage.

Nature observation in London parks

The Common has been the site of several historical events, including military activities during the Civil War and later in World War II. Additionally, the area is also known for its connection to Wimbledon Tennis, although the famous tennis tournament does not take place directly on the Commons, but on nearby grounds.

The Commons are particularly known for their diverse wildlife. Many bird species, including birds nesting in wetlands and woodlands, call this area home. Those interested in nature observation can spot many native animals such as deer, rabbits, and squirrels.
